Outbound as instrumentation

2026-04-22

Treat cold email like a telescope, not a megaphone.

A megaphone optimises for volume and copy. A telescope optimises for where you point it and what you can see when you do. Most outbound is megaphone work — louder subject lines, more sequences, "personalisation at scale." Telescope work is different. It asks: given this audience and this angle, what does the response field look like? What's there that I couldn't see before?

The instrument matters more than the message

A great message pointed at the wrong list teaches you nothing. A mediocre message pointed at the right list teaches you everything — even when it fails, because the failure is shaped.

What this means in practice

Spend 70% of your effort on segmentation, sequencing, and signal capture. Spend 30% on copy. Most teams have this inverted, and most teams are stuck.
